Accrediting Candidate’s Previous Learning (APL)

ITEC’s objective is to ensure that students fully demonstrate their ability and knowledge. This is usually achieved through an ITEC examination, course work or practical assessment, however if a candidate has clear evidence of previous achievement then this may be taken into account and may exempt them from one or more assessments.

How the system works

First you must check whether or not the candidates existing qualification is recognised by ITEC and what APL it offers. Click on a unit to see the qualifications ITEC accepts for APL.

For a recognised qualification:

For a qualification not on the recognised list we will consider applications following the procedure below:

Grading for candidates with APL

It is important to note that comparing one qualification with another is not an exact science, and therefore ITEC will only accept APL as a basic pass (60%). If candidates wish to gain higher grades such as a distinction they will need to take the examination. Where candidates can prove that they have achieved a 'similar' qualification from another approved awarding body, they will be required to be assessed against ITEC assessment criteria for a minimum of 50% of the qualification (theoretically and practically) in order for ITEC to issue the diploma/certificate. As the ITEC syllabus structure and assessment methods were updated in 2002, candidates who achieved their ITEC qualifications in accordance with the pre-2002 syllabus can be accredited with prior learning as described above, however their individual results cannot be carried forward due to the unitisation of the syllabus.
