Tony Lau-Walker CBE

Trustee

Tony joined the Board of Trustees of VTCT in June 2010, having been on the VTCT Educational Giving Advisory Panel for two years.

An International Relations graduate from the University of Wales he trained as a teacher for adult and further education and has spent over thirty years in vocational education both as a deliverer and as a senior manager. Starting at Guildford College in Surrey he developed a network of teacher training programmes and counselling courses. He spent time as the RSA Chief Verifier for Counselling and an additional Inspector for OFSTED.

He became Director of Curriculum at Eastleigh College in 1997 and then Chief Executive of the College in January 2003, the same year as the college became recognised as a Beacon College. The college is the centre of a partnership of training providers which holds the country’s largest employer engagement contract with the Skills Funding Agency servicing London and the whole of the South. As Chief Executive he developed a network of 20 colleges to peer review quality of leadership and management and became Chair of the Windsor Group of Colleges which focus on collaborative work with employers to meet the training needs of large organisations. Tony retired from the College in August 2014.

Tony was chosen as a leader in his field to be a member of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and, as a Commissioner, contributed his expertise and resources to the full range of the Commission’s activities.

Tony possesses an extensive experience of the management and delivery of vocational education, employability and meeting industry standards. His perspective of provider needs for effective qualification delivery and quality assurance are invaluable to the Board.
