The Institute of Massage & Sports Therapy was established in 1998 by Rachel McCarthy, to provide a professional center of training for complementary and sports therapists. We are proud to have run high standard, professional courses in holistic massage, sports injury and sports equipment for the past 17 years.
We offer a range of courses from our main venue in Annacotty, Limerick as well as from the GMIT in Galway. We have also opened a new venue in Kilkenny in recent years.
It is our aim to ensure that graduates of the Institute are trained to the highest standards and are fully capable before undergoing examinations.
The practical skills and sound academic training on each of our courses have been developed to provide every student with the necessary skills to see their studies as a stepping stone to a rewarding career. Specialists in Sports Medicine The Institute prides itself on its successful history in the sports therapy field, with many graduates working in this popular and growing industry.
Until recently this industry was unregulated, with the majority of practitioners being unqualified. It was all too often, that injuries were treated poorly and in many cases made more serious with incorrect treatment and rehabilitation advice. Thankfully, teams and sports clubs are now recognising the need for fully trained and qualified sports therapists, who have the ability and skill to treat the injured area in a confident, safe and effective manner.
The comprehensive syllabus covered on the sports injury course allows graduates to perform this and also gives them a good understanding of correct training methods, injury prevention and sports nutrition, allowing them to offer all-round advice to their athletes.
The Complementary Therapies In today’s competitive and busy world, more and more people are turning to complementary therapies for stress relief, injury therapy and for general health and well-being. the natural drug-free approach of these therapies to health care is becoming more popular and is now widely accepted and recognised. All of our courses are run on a part time intensive basis, to allow for mature students to continue working as they study.
Career Opportunities The Institute’s reputation is highly respected in the complementary therapy and sports therapy sectors, with its qualification being in great demand from employers.
There are opportunities for therapists to be employed with sports teams, in sports centers, health clubs, spas, leisure centers, with chiropractors and osteopaths and in nursing and special needs homes. Many graduates have also successfully set up their own practice, which can be run either full time or part time, from a private clinic or from home.
