Training pays off for our runners at The Great South Run 2017

12 team members from ITEC and VTCT ran the 10-mile Great South Run 2017 in aid of Naomi House yesterday and have almost hit their £1k target.

The Great South Run is an annual 10-mile road running race which takes place in Portsmouth, Hampshire – just down the motorway from the VTCT Eastleigh office. Since its formation in 1990, The Great South Run has become one of Europe’s most popular mass participation races over 10 miles.

The organisation pledged its support by funding the entrance fee, running kit, and allocated time for training during office hours. Team members trained hard in preparation for the race. Overall their final running time scores were:

  1. Lyall Jones 01:25:10
  2. Gary Mitchell 01:26:45
  3. Lisa Secker 01:32:23
  4. Thomas Hynd 01:35:52
  5. Laura Wilson 01:36:24
  6. Pam Praine 01:41:43
  7. Luke Court 01:43:59
  8. Vicky Hardy 01:45:11
  9. Ben Blackburn 01:45:40
  10. Anna Skrzat 01:48:32
  11. Devi Virasami 02:06:36
  12. Natasha Bulley 02:32:24

Not only are the team members incredibility proud of their accomplishments in completing the race, they have also almost hit their £1,000 fundraising target for nominated charity of the year Naomi House.

Quality and Processing Administrator, Lyall Jones who completed the race with the best time said “It’s an amazing cause so we were all happy to do our bit. I was shocked by my time as I beat my target by about 20 minutes! I’ve run short distances fairly consistently with Tom and Luke during lunch breaks but none of us did as many long runs as we would have liked. I’m extremely impressed by the walkers who committed to the event despite never having done anything similar and having very little preparation.

Well done to everyone who stuck with it and made it to the race day. The best bit for me is beating my target and having the overall best time.”

Events Logistics Co-ordinator, Tom Hynd who completed at just over an hour and a half said: “It was a fantastic race to be a part of. I entered the race having never completed any long distance running before, it was great to be able to test myself physically and mentally while raising money for a great charity like Naomi House too.

I wouldn’t have been able to complete the distance if it wasn’t for the support from the team with plenty of training runs during lunch breaks and nutritional advice in the race build-up.

The overall atmosphere and support during the race was amazing, especially at the Naomi House cheer points – hearing their support really pushed me to pick up the pace and beat my targeted time by five minutes.”

The Assessment Group’s 2017 nominated charity of the year is Naomi House Children’s Hospice (Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust). The charity provides excellence in hospice care to support local children and young adults. There’s still time to donate to this worthy cause via our JustGiving page.
